Wordle has used 1,877 different answers since it launched with CIGAR on 19 June 2021, and the most recent is puzzle 1,892. Every answer is listed below. Search by word, date, or puzzle number, and sort it whichever way you like. Today’s answer is never included, so you can check a word before you play without a spoiler.

How to search and filter the archive

The quickest way in is the search box: type any five-letter word for a straight verdict, or use the filters to narrow the list. To look one word up on its own, check any single word.

Checking whether a word has been used

When you type a five-letter word, the letter tiles flip the way they do in the game. They turn green if the word has been an answer, and amber if it has not. A green result gives you the puzzle number and the date it was used, and if a word has been the answer twice, it shows both. So typing SERVE returns its puzzle number and date; typing a word that has never come up returns a plain line saying it has not been an answer through yesterday, with today’s answer left out so nothing is spoiled. You can also type a puzzle number or a date to jump straight to that day’s answer.

Narrowing the list with filters

The filters work the way your guesses do, by ruling candidates in and out. Starts with narrows the list to answers that open with the letters you know; ends with does the same for a suffix, so you can pull every answer finishing in ER or LY. Contains letters keeps only answers that include the letters you name, while excludes letters hides any answer holding a letter you have already ruled out. The position pattern lets you fix a letter in one of the five slots and leave the rest open, which is useful once a green tile has locked a spot. The year filter shows one year on its own, from 2021 to now.

Sorting, jumping, and showing repeats

Three sort orders cover most needs. Alphabetical is best when you are checking one specific word, newest first catches you up on what you missed, and oldest first lets you read the archive from the start. The sticky A–Z bar jumps you to any letter as you scroll, and the repeats toggle narrows the list to answers that have appeared more than once. What those repeats mean is worth its own section, below.

Wordle now repeats answers

For its first four years, Wordle never used the same answer twice. That changed on 2 February 2026, when the answer was CIGAR — the word that started the game back in June 2021 — returning on Groundhog Day. Since then, 23 answers have come back for a second time, arriving at a rate of roughly one every ten days, and the gaps between them have been getting shorter.

The reason is straightforward. Wordle draws its answers from a limited pool of common five-letter words, and after more than 1,800 puzzles that pool was running low. Rather than pad the game with obscure words, plurals, or longer answers, the New York Times decided to let old answers come round again.

For players, this undoes a habit worth unlearning. It used to be safe to rule a word out because you had seen it before, since a used answer was gone for good. That no longer holds. Any past answer can now reappear, so a word showing up in this archive tells you it has been used, not that it is off the table. New answers are still far more common than repeats, so most days you are still meeting a word for the first time.

None of this makes the archive less useful. It changes what the archive is for. Instead of a list of words you can cross off permanently, it is now the fastest way to see which answers have already had their turn and which ones could come back around. Why today’s answer isn’t on this list

The list here stops at yesterday, and that is deliberate. It means you can look up a word, run the filters, or scroll the archive from the beginning without ever running into the solution you are still working on today. Today’s answer is already recorded behind the scenes; it appears here tomorrow, once it can no longer spoil anyone’s game.

When to look up a past Wordle answer

People reach this page for a few different reasons. Some missed a day and want to know what the answer was. Some are settling a friendly argument about whether a particular word has ever come up. Others are mid-puzzle, holding a promising guess and wanting to know whether it has already been used before they spend a line on it. And some are curious how the game has shifted over five years of daily play.

What checking the archive does has changed, though. It used to double as a way to eliminate a word for good: if it was on the list, it could not be the answer again. Now that answers can return, that certainty is gone, and the archive reads better as a record of what Wordle has used and a guide to its patterns than as a list of words that are ruled out forever.

How Wordle picks its answers

Wordle runs on two separate word lists, and knowing the difference explains a lot about the game. One is a curated list of possible answers, holding roughly 2,300 common, everyday words. The other is a much larger list of more than ten thousand words the game accepts as valid guesses. That second list is why you can type an obscure word and have it accepted even though it would never be the solution.

The practical point for a player is this: a guess being accepted tells you nothing about whether it could ever be an answer. Plenty of real words are allowed as guesses but sit outside the answer pool entirely. The archive is how you tell the two apart, because it only ever contains words that have genuinely been the solution.

The lists have a history worth knowing. Josh Wardle built Wordle, and the New York Times bought it in January 2022. The Times then removed a handful of the original answers it judged too obscure or sensitive, and its editor, Tracy Bennett, has since added new ones of her own. The four days Wordle had two answers

Four times in Wordle’s run, the New York Times changed the answer partway through the day. Players who had already solved it saw one word; those who played later saw another. Both count as real answers, which is part of why the total number of entries in this archive runs slightly ahead of the number of puzzles.

The reasons vary. Two of the swaps replaced words the editors thought too obscure, and one moved away from a word that had picked up an awkward association in the day’s news. In the archive, both answers appear under the same puzzle number, so if you find one number listed twice, this is why rather than an error.

What the answers reveal about Wordle’s word choices

Look across all 1,877 answers and clear patterns show up. Wordle leans heavily on common, everyday words and mostly avoids the obscure ones it will still accept as guesses. Certain endings recur far more than others, with plenty of answers closing on E or Y and few ending in a hard consonant cluster. Vowels tend to sit in the second and third positions rather than at the edges of the word.

A few letters also turn up far more often than their share of the alphabet would suggest, and those are exactly the letters a strong opening word leans on. These findings come from the answers themselves, not from English in general, which is what makes them useful at the board.

How this list is kept accurate

An archive is only worth using if it is right, so here is how this one is maintained. The answers come from the official New York Times Wordle feed and are cross-checked every day against a second, independent source before anything on the page changes. The four two-answer days are reconciled by hand so the counts stay consistent.

The list updates automatically each day shortly after midnight US Eastern, which is why the timestamp near the top is live rather than a fixed date typed into the page. The total is reported as 1,877 distinct answers across 1,897 entries through puzzle 1,892. The gap between those two numbers is the four two-answer days plus the 23 words that have appeared twice, so the count reflects something exact rather than a round figure.
